Shopify Agentic Storefronts: How to Sell Products on ChatGPT

E-commerce businesses using Shopify for their storefronts can now take advantage of a new sales channel to get their products to show up in AI conversations. This new type of sales channel is called Agentic Storefronts.

Agentic Storefronts enable AI shopping experiences to:

  • discover your Shopify products in AI platforms like ChatGPT, CoPilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity
  • recommend them to shoppers in AI conversations
  • and (in supported experiences) allow customers to complete checkout directly inside AI Platforms

This is not a chatbot on your website, and it’s not traditional SEO. It’s a new commerce channel where ChatGPT and other AI platforms become the shopping interface, while Shopify remains the system of record for products, inventory, checkout, orders, and fulfillment. This can help bring products to a whole new audience while e-commerce brands stay in full control through their Shopify account.

How AI Can Improve Customer Experience

When your store is eligible and enabled for an agentic storefront, AI visibility for your products will improve while also enhancing the customer experience. Customers will no longer have to leave the AI platform to continue reviewing products that they are interested in.

It begins with a user-generated prompt. A shopper can ask ChatGPT for something like “best moisturizer for dry skin” or “clean vitamin C serum for sensitive skin”.

ChatGPT will then recommend products based on the shopper’s intent. In this AI-generated response, your products can appear with:

  • Name of product
  • Price
  • Images
  • Variants/options
  • Availability

Data for this product can be managed by businesses directly in Shopify, while users engage with this data in ChatGPT or another AI platform.

There are two ways shoppers can purchase:

  • by clicking into the Shopify storefront from ChatGPT
  • when supported, complete their checkout directly in ChatGPT.

The options make your products more accessible and convenient to users looking for efficient ways to purchase products without having to leave their preferred AI search engine. User experience greatly improves through the convenience of providing all the product information to users on the platform of their choosing, without users having to leave their searches to purchase.

A Single Platform for Product Listing Management

The most important concept of Shopify agentic storefronts: you don’t “list” products in ChatGPT, CoPilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity. Unlike marketplaces, businesses do not manually upload products to AI search engines, as it is all managed through Shopify.

  • Shopify provides structured product data via the Shopify Catalog
  • The AI channel decides when to show your products
  • Orders flow back into Shopify with the channel attribution

Managing product listings all through Shopify streamlines product visibility across multiple AI platforms all at the same time. The simplification of product listing management is one of the biggest benefits of the agentic storefront. Business owners can efficiently update product listings with the latest inventory data, price changes, and other product details without having to manually update each listing one at a time.

Eligibility & Rollout (What Merchants Need to Know)

Shopify states that Agentic Storefronts are in early access and are not yet available for all Shopify stores. When it becomes available, merchants will receive an email and Shopify notification.

Current Eligibility Requirements (High Impact)

Shopify’s current eligibility requirements for the agentic storefront include:

  • Store must be based in the United States
  • Agentic storefronts are currently shown to US customers
  • Products must be eligible for inclusion in Shopify Catalog
  • Merchant must agree to Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms
  • Store policies must be added

Store cannot require login before checkout

How Agentic Storefronts Work (Under the Hood)

Shopify Catalog is the Backbone

Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts rely on the Shopify Catalog, which provides structured product data used by AI channels.

Catalog Mapping (The Lever Most Stores Miss)

Shopify references Catalog Mapping as a way to improve how your product data is interpreted for AI selling, especially if your store uses metafields or custom structures.

How to Setup Agentic Storefronts in Shopify

In the Shopify Admin, store owners can manage their agentic storefronts under:

Settings → Sales channels → Agentic storefronts

From there, the storefront is enabled using the following steps:

  • enable the specific AI channels where you want product visibility (like ChatGPT)
  • view products available for direct purchase per channel
  • unpublish specific products from direct selling

Key Limitations (Critical for Setting Expectations)

Subscriptions and Bundles Are Not Supported

Shopify explicitly notes:

  • Subscriptions are not supported
  • Product bundles are not supported

For now, the ability to checkout directly within an AI platform does not currently support subscriptions and product bundles through Shopify’s agentic storefronts. While these are currently not supported, it does not mean that AI platforms cannot recommend subscriptions and bundles to users based on analysis of user questions and in-platform shopping behavior.

If a user purchases a product directly in ChatGPT, ChatGPT is capable of recommending a bundle or product subscription (which a user would have to purchase through the Shopify storefront, as opposed to directly within ChatGPT), if that is what the user is looking for through follow-up queries.

Pickup / Local Delivery Not Supported

Agentic storefront checkouts currently don’t support:

  • local delivery
  • in-store pickup
  • pickup points

If that checkout option is available through a business, users would have to do so directly on the business’s Shopify site.

Discounts: Automatic Discounts Work Best

Shopify notes:

  • Automatic discounts are supported
  • Discount codes may not be supported depending on the channel UI

Discount codes are supported if there’s a discount code input field set up in the agentic storefront checkout. This is not automatically set up for all agentic storefronts. Businesses will have to ensure that this is set up within their admin account if they want to take advantage of offering discount codes right in an AI platform.

Checkout UI Extensions May Not Render

Shopify notes that ChatGPT Instant Checkout doesn’t support checkout blocks, and other channels may only support essential blocks. Shopify Plus merchants may not see their custom fields, upsells, and other specific validations displayed within their agentic storefront. While customers can still checkout in ChatGPT, the difference in checkout screen display may cause disruptions in collection of data crucial to businesses during the checkout phase.

Before finalizing the setup of an agentic storefront, double check which checkout blocks are being used within checkout that users can do through their AI platform. Your checkout may have to be adjusted if you rely on certain data to be collected during the checkout phase of the customer journey.

Analytics & Attribution (What You Can and Can’t Track)

While Shopify storefront owners can track orders made by customers from the agentic storefront, there are some limitations. Because the entire purchase takes place within an AI platform, tools like the Shopify pixel, Google tags, and GA may not fire because they work through code injected into the Shopify storefront’s HTML. Purchasing through an AI platform means that there is no browser session on your domain, so the pixel never has a chance to run.

This means you will be unable to track data like:

  • What query the user asked before buying
  • Checkout funnel steps
  • What other products the customer looked at before purchasing
  • How long the session was

Privacy & Data Sharing (Important for Merchant Trust)

Shopify clarifies that AI channels receive:

  • product information required for recommendations
  • customer + order information required to complete purchases

AI channels only access customer/order info for orders originating from that channel (not your entire customer list). For a transaction to be completed through Shopify’s AI channel, certain data needs to be shared such as customer information and order information.

Store Optimization Best Practices

1) Product Data Must Be Machine-Readable

This AI channel follows similar machine-reading standards to Shopify’s other channels. Agentic commerce success depends on product clarity: titles, descriptions, variants, images, inventory accuracy, and policies.

To make your product data machine-readable, optimize the following:

  • Structured data markup: all product pages should contain schema-formatted structured data markup (JSON-LD) so AI platforms can correctly interpret and organize product data
  • Robots.txt: AI crawlers need permission to crawl product pages on your site. Some Shopify stores may block certain bots from crawling the site through the robots.txt. Make sure the site explicitly allows AI bots access to crawl product pages. You may still block access to onsite checkout, cart, admin pages, and other pages with sensitive data.
  • Up-to-date data: For AI platforms to show potential customers accurate product availability, ensure that information like inventory availability and pricing is up-to-date in real-time in Shopify.

2) Variants Must Be Standardized

Variant confusion reduces AI confidence and hurts conversion. Product variants data must be consistent when setting up those products in the agentic storefront. An inconsistent variant structure can lead to confusing customers when they try to purchase through an AI platform. An AI needs to understand what options are available for a product in order to recommend them to a customer. If the information on variants is not clearly provided by the shop owner, an AI platform may begin to generate its own answer to customers that does not accurately match what the Shopify store has available.

3) Collections Should Match Real Shopping Questions

Intent-based collections support discovery and recommendations. The goal of AI platforms is to accurately provide a generated answer to a customer’s questions based on their intent. Inventory should be organized around how customers search, rather than how shop owners want to organize the products.

4) Policies Must Be Explicit

Shopify requires store policies for eligibility and highlights their importance for the channel. Clarity in policies helps AI platforms provide accurate information to customers when they shop directly through that platform. Because the customers do not need to go into the Shopify site to purchase a product, the information provided needs to match what is on the site for the best customer experience.

5) Legal Disclosures Must Be Near the Top

Shopify notes legal disclosures should be included within the first 6,000 characters of the product description.

Practical Rollout Plan

Phase 1 — Make the Catalog AI-Ready

To start rolling out an agentic storefront, Shopify owners should prepare their catalog, which can be done right through that AI channel. This includes providing the following:

  • standardize titles
  • fix variants
  • improve specs and policies
  • ensure inventory accuracy

Accuracy of information provided within the catalog is crucial to successful conversion rates from AI platforms. Customers should receive all the information that they can find on a Shopify product page, within their chosen AI platform.

Phase 2 — Enable Agentic Storefronts

Once the catalog is set up, the agentic storefront can be enabled. Enabling this AI channel requires the following steps:

  • activate the desired AI channels (which can include ChatGPT, CoPilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode, when eligible)
  • confirm product eligibility
  • unpublish risky products
  • test purchase flow

Phase 3 — Optimize for Conversion

Once enabled, shop owners can optimize their AI channels for high conversion rates. Some opportunities to optimize include:

  • rewrite top PDPs for question-based shopping
  • add FAQs for best sellers
  • improve imagery and alt text
  • create starter kits as standalone SKUs

Final Takeaway

Shopify Agentic Storefronts are still in an early access stage and are not yet available for every Shopify e-commerce site. To check eligibility, site owners will receive a notification in the Shopify Admin and via email.

Shopify Agentic Storefronts are a real new commerce channel where:

✅ Shopify provides structured product data
✅ ChatGPT can recommend products in conversation
✅ Customers can purchase directly in-chat
✅ Orders are created and attributed in Shopify

But success depends on a variety of factors including:

  • clean catalog structure
  • standardized variants
  • strong policies
  • inventory accuracy
  • realistic expectations around checkout limitations and analytics
