Google set to Merge Ads with AI Mode

Recently, internal documents from Google have been released stating that the company is planning on incorporating sponsored ads into their new AI mode. This is the latest advancement across many online platforms choosing to optimize ad campaigns through generative results. Lets find out what this means for the future of marketing and how it may impact your Google Ad campaigns in the coming months.

What is AI Mode?

Google AI search mode

For those unaware, Google has recently released a new feature called AI Mode. This is a step up from their previous feature, AI Overview, which provided complex, conversational results to users’ queries. AI mode allows for more complex conversations with a chat bot built directly into Google’s search engine. This is the latest step in Google’s plan to completely automate user experience on their website. While this is great for individuals looking to get answers as fast as possible, it is presenting massive changes in marketing techniques for anyone who operates Google Ads.

What This Means for Marketing

As we have stated in previous blogs, generative engine optimization works differently than the classic search engine optimization. Due to AI chat bots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini being able to understand complex queries, it is much harder to optimize for specific keywords. For advertisements, their targeting and placement will no longer be based around specific keywords. Rather, the entire scope of one’s conversation with Google’s AI Mode will be taken into account when targeting advertisements. Within a few years, we may see keyword based marketing become completely obsolete, and campaigns will have to be optimized for wordy conversations rather than short, specific queries.

While keywords in the traditional sense may become old hat, their concept seems to be continuing on with the rise of AI. Although queries in generative engines often include fillers words like “hello” and “thank you”, which can impact keyword matching, they still maintain descriptions about what the user is looking for. In the coming months, people will be using AI Mode to find products they are interested in based on complex descriptions rather than keyword matching. The best thing professionals can do is make sure their website and product pages are highly optimized for AI crawlers. This means adding Robots.txt onto their llms.txt, and making sure their site is using accurate, high-quality content.

How Cultural Impacts Affect AI Usage

An aspect often overlooked when it comes to AI is its cultural reception. Data has shown that in the past three years, the general public consensus on AI usage has skyrocketed. While originally viewed as untrustworthy, it seems like the charming, human nature of chatbots have won over a majority of the population. AI usage continues to rise every quarter, and with that comes technology better based around users interests. More and more people are using AI to shop for gifts and products, therefore Google is going to cash-in on this untapped market.

What this means for Ads

A topic we recently covered in another blog, was about Meta Platforms pushing marketers to automate their campaigns. This sacrificed a certain amount of creative control, for the benefit of reaching a larger audience. While it seems like Google is planning on keeping their traditional ad graphics with images and clickable text, it is uncertain if they will follow Meta’s ideology. Perhaps being featured in AI mode will be included in the fine print of all Google Ad campaigns, or it will be a premium feature marketers have to pay for. Either way, paid ads are still Google’s main source of revenue. With the holiday season arriving shortly, we imagine more details on the topic will be coming soon.

The Future of Google Ads

Although nothing is guaranteed, the general consensus is that paid advertising through keywords will quickly become obsolete. In a few years, AI Mode may become the norm, and Google’s classic ‘10 blue links’ will be a thing of the past. If that is the case, optimizing and targeting for conversational queries between user and chatbot will take precedence over keyword research.
